Rug making has been practised in one form or another for centuries and has proved an enduring and highly accessible craft. Known in England since the Tudor period, it was practiced all over Europe and then taken up in North America, where it has flourished. The resurgence of interest in rag rug-making today is not only a response to the great variety of creative possibilities, but also reflects the growing awareness of the need to reduce, reuse and recycle.

It is essentially a thrift craft, using materials found around the home. A simple frame, hook and progger are all that are required to produce works of lasting beauty and practicality. It adapts to contemporary design or can be of something that just gives you pleasure to look at. From rugs to carry bags, hats and other useful articles, you will find a place for this craft in your life.

WHAT IS PROVIDED: Tools, fabric, everything you need.

WHAT TO BRING: A picture or design, in the finished size, that you would like to make, to copy onto fabric and your lunch.

At the end of the class, students will:

• Understand how to use the rug hooks and “proggers”

• Understand which fabric/material is suitable for hooking and “progging”

• Be able to prepare fabric to use in their design

• Be able to hook an area of the fabric, with well-spaced and level loops

• Be able to “prog” an area to create a textured effect

• Create a 3D flower using hooking and “progging” techniques

• Be able to finish the edge of the design for durable wear

• Be able to create a design of their choice to work on

• Have an example of work, showing all skills, to refer to later

• Own a rug hook and “progger” to use at home.
